1642 - 1720
The original dwelling, a small farmhouse and out dwellings, was constructed in 1720 and was named “Seaview House”. The house was built on land owned by descendants of a cobbler by the name of McManus who was granted the land in 1642 in recognition of services to General Monroe an English army leader sent to the area to bring peace to civil unrest.
The tenants of “Seaview House” in 1720 were Edmund and Widow Nelson whose annual rent consisted of a cash sum and the completion of “exacting duties” of “12 bushels of oats and work for 4 days of a man and a horse.”
1720 – 1860
The farm had various tenants until 1858 when Robert Hamilton M.D. arrived from Liverpool to retire to the area. He knocked the farmhouse down and built a new home in 1860.
The fabulous new house, designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, who also designed Belfast Castle and Queens University , was named the “Magherabuoy House”. The name “Magherabuoy” means, “yellow expanse to the sea”. The property was so named because of the bright yellow flowers of the oil seed rape fields that stretched down to the sea from the front of the house.
1860 – 1986
The old house has had many owners of the years some unknown, others well known, such as Sir Dawson Bates in the early 1900's.
1986
In 1986 the property then named “Hill Top Restaurant|” was purchased by Leslie and Sandra Griffin and was first opened as “The Magherabuoy House Hotel”.
Previous to this the property was a restaurant and private house named “Hill Top Restaurant ”.
